Jovie Nichols has one goal: don’t end up like her sister.

After years of living in the chaos of her older sister Indy’s drug addiction, Jovie has a plan: ace her AP classes, dominate the soccer field, and crush her application to Yale. Then maybe she’ll have righted the wrongs that Indy made against her family—and her heart might stop hating her big sister so much.

But on the first day of junior year, her spotless record goes up in smoke when she literally runs into Hiro Katayama. A vape falls right in front of the security guard, and Hiro won’t admit it’s his. They’re both sentenced to twelve weeks of Students Against Addiction—a support group for addicts. It’s a nightmare come true, but Jovie must endure it in order to avoid a suspension on her permanent record that would dash her Yale dreams forever.

As for Hiro, he may be the school’s all-star soccer striker, but Jovie sees nothing but trouble—the kind who hangs with the wrong crowd, parties on the weekends, and gets people like her sister hooked. The kind who wears designer jeans and can turn Jovie into a stammering mess with one smile. 

As the weekly meetings march on, Jovie’s interactions with Hiro turn from confrontations to unexpected heart-to-hearts, and Jovie discovers Hiro’s life mirrors hers more than she ever imagined. He’s caught in the same drug-infected cycle she barely escaped, and only she knows how to help him—as long as her hatred toward addicts doesn’t turn her heart to stone first. 

Sometimes, the loved ones of the addict are the ones who need saving the most.
